Feats of Clay
Clay Lyon recently attended the ASID Chapter Leadership Conference in Calgary, Ontario representing the local chapter's Industry Partners.
Calgary is a wonderful travel spot--breathtaking scenery and outdoor adventure are as you imagined, but what might surprise you is the culture and cuisine.  Our faves were Nellie's for breakfast, Calgary Tower for view and Prince's Island Park, a downtown park along the Elbow River.  Want our review?  ask for details . .

Ever the tree-hugger and seeker of better, greener remodeling methods, Clay is a charter member of the 'Disciples of Green' (aka Residential Green Building Committee).  Clay and fellow Disciples are participating in a HRES Energy Fair and Sustainable Homes Tour on October 4th.   ask for details . .

Customized Glass
Considering a fresh alternative to granite countertops, read Clay's latest article extolling the virtues of customized glass in the July/August issue of Home Improvement Resource.

Tips
Do it now. . .  Now through early September is the right time to:
  • Run dehumidifier in your basement if you have an old stone foundation - to help keep late summer humidity down and mold at bay.
  • Grass fertilizer laid down for healthy lawns to survive the heat.
  • Change furnace filters at end of cooling season.
  • Cut off dead branches from tree BEFORE they fall on house/gutters.
  • Tuckpointing - inspect masonry joints around brick/stone for deterioration, and repair where necessary.
  • Boiler/furnace inspection prior to cold weather season - no fun finding out it's not working properly the weekend you really need it!
  • Clean out gutters (this has to be done every spring and fall - important, and will always be coming up!)
  • Weatherize windows, doors - weather-stripping and caulking prior to cold weather.  Inspect your foundation and perform an energy audit and heating system maintenance to make sure your home is ready for warmth and efficiency this winter.

Trends
Home Builders Morphing into Remodelers. . .  The downturn in new home construction has resulted in builders seeking work elsewhere.  What you need to know is there are significant differences between working on new homes and existing homes, and the technical side is only part of the equation.  A big part of it is knowing how to respect a family's privacy and space.  Before starting a major remodeling project, choose your remodeler carefully.  You will be spending a lot of time with him and his crew.

Good green news for  hardwood floor fans. . . If green guilt has dimmed your desire for the natural beauty and character of hardwood floors, relax and feel good about indulging your pleasure--hardwood floors are now an eco-friendly choice. . . Midwest hardwood forests are growing faster than we're cutting them.

Testimonials
Clay and his crew have exceeded our expectations at every front.  Clay's careful attention to detail, his persistence with job site cleanliness, and his sound understanding of all aspects of the project - from design and structural to plumbing/electrical/mechanical and carpentry - have made this project by far the best remodel we have completed.  We now have a high-end kitchen with the quality of workmanship befitting the materials we've selected.

Projects
What we've learned. . .  Lyon Construction+Design is currently engaged in projects of diverse extremes . . .from a Brookside bungalow bath remodel to a move-in customization of a luxury Plaza condo to a one-thing-lead-to another suburban estate makeover.  We'll be featuring some of these projects in greater detail down the road, but the takeaway for now is that we've enjoyed working with clients of vastly different needs and tastes.  Working with people of quality and finding the distinct look that fits their personality and style is satisfying, joy-filled work indeed!
