If we're past Groundhog Day, can spring be far behind? Here are some things to do to make the season come to life for your home. Check your roof and flashing for damage. Inspect and sweep the chimney flue. Clean the kitchen exhaust hood and air filter. Clean the clothes dryer exhaust duct and area behind and below dryer. Replace your furnace filter. Check your smoke alarm batteries. Clean out gutters. (This has to be done every spring and fall.) Check gutters and trim for wear. 10 Do's and Don'ts of Home Renovation . . . 	Current Project What we've learned . . . Designing and constructing a new kitchen and butler's pantry in a south Plaza/Brookside neighborhood reminds us of why we got into this business. It's a beautiful, older home with the character and charm that only comes with time. But . . . like older homes of its ilk, the original kitchen was lacking in modern convenience and fraught with traffic flow challenges. We're adding to the family's enjoyment of their home by removing some load-bearing walls and re-arranging the half-bath. The result is a more open kitchen layout with an island, French door, windows, and increased cabinet storage. And the home still has charm and character.

	Recent Project The Mitchell family loved their home and suburban neighborhood but needed more space to accommodate the bustle of their large, active family. They wanted to increase their home's utility in ways that balanced aesthetics, personality and lifestyle preferences. Lyon Construction+Design worked with their architect to help create the desired space and amenities at a price within the Mitchell's budget. The project included a new breakfast room with dining table large enough to seat all seven family members; a remodeled kitchen; a new room with an Endless Pool for lap workouts; a soundproof, high functioning home office; and upper floor laundry room; a child's bedroom; and a gorgeous new patio all tricked out with the coolest in outdoor kitchen/cooking stuff. Owner Clay Lyon holds a bachelors degree in science and mathematics from Colorado State University and masters degree in business administration from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. His professional certifications include NARI Certified Remodeler; Registered Environmental Professional, State of Oregon; and Registered Asbestos Abatement Project Contractor/Supervisor, EPA. In addition to NKBA, he is a board member representing industry partners of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), and is a member of 'Disciples of Green' (AKA Residential Green Building Committee).
