About Us

"Our goal in each project is to retain the soul of the original space while adding beauty, comfort, and function for the homeowner." -- Clay Lyon

Lyon Construction+Design is a full-service residential remodeling and construction company specializing in restoring and updating grand, older homes. It is also a reliable source for projects ranging from handyman work and routine home maintenance to new-home construction.

Clay Lyon founded the company in 2002 after he and his wife, Robin, discovered a need for what they described as an "innovative, conscientious, customer service-based remodeling contractor." The company culture created by the business and life partners is built upon respect for clients and their sacred space, integrity of design and workmanship, and innovation. "Our challenge in renovating a home is to add comfort for the client, not take it away," says Lyon. "I like to see how efficiently we can reach the client's objective and how beautiful the end result can be."

Lyon Construction+Design is well-known and respected in the industry. In its young history, it has garnered numerous prestigious awards, including Kansas City Homes & Gardens magazine Remodel of the Year Awards each year since 2004; engaged actively in its industry; and received praise from clients.

The Principals

Clay Lyon

Born with the curiosity of a scientist and the soul of an artist, Clay Lyon is particularly drawn to restoring older, larger homes. “I love old homes -- the proportion; the wide, double-hung windows; the lines; the trim; the plaster walls,” says Lyon. “They feel like family and home.”

Clay began his home remodeling and construction career in 1987 and formed his first residential remodeling company in Portland, Oregon, where he specialized in homes rich in age and character. His professional experience also includes work in asbestos abatement, real estate development, custom wood furniture-making, and residential energy conservation. Clay’s business philosophy values relationship as a top priority.

He is a Kansas City, Missouri, native who earned a bachelor's degree in science and mathematics from Colorado State University and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. His professional certifications include:

  • NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry) Certified Remodeler
  • US EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm per Section 402 of TSCA
  • Registered Environmental Professional, State of Oregon
  • Registered Asbestos Abatement Project Contractor/Supervisor, EPA

He is chair of the National Kitchen and Bath Association Builders & Remodelers Council and serves on the national association’s Board of Directors, representing the NKBA’s Advisory Council of Builders/Remodelers. He is a board member of the American Society of Interior Design, representing industry partners. He is also a member of "Disciples of Green" (AKA Residential Green Building Committee) and is working toward becoming a NARI Green Certified Professional.

Robin Lyon

Robin brings to the company an innate sense of classic design and an eye for detail. She values simplicity and hospitality in the home environment. Her décor style is eclectic, with a preference for blending antiques with new pieces, and an emphasis on lighting and art.

Robin’s primary career is outside the company as a speech-language pathologist and assistive technology consultant in the Blue Valley School District. But she has seen her role in the company grow through the years. Initially, she served as an advocate and sounding board for Clay.

“My role morphed after accompanying Clay on a client appointment to the client’s home,” recalls Robin. “We hit it off with the couple, and Clay noticed that they responded well to another couple. My presence changed the dynamic,” she says. “We got a better, more complete picture of their needs and wants.” Robin also is a Kansas City, Missouri, native. She graduated from Central Missouri State University, where she earned bachelor's and master's degrees in speech pathology. She also holds a master's degree in special education administration from the University of Kansas.
